CAIRO – 18 January 2021: The number of Coronavirus patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) or using hospital ventilators has decreased by 50 percent since the beginning of January, compared to the figures in December, according to the Ministry of Health.

In her remarks, Minister of Health Hala Zayed explained that the drop in the urgent cases comes as a result of continuous clinical follow-up of the cases, applying the updated treatment protocols, in addition to following up on domestic isolation cases.

Minister Zayed further said that the ministry is in contact with all countries that have obtained final approval to use COVID-19 vaccines, in order to obtain these vaccines, adding that Egypt does not rely solely on one vaccine, but it adopts a diverse approach in importing different approved vaccines, while coordinating with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI Alliance).

The Health Ministry said Sunday that 890 new coronavirus cases were detected, upping the total number of confirmed cases to 156,397.


In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 56 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 8,583.


As many as 702 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 122,993 so far, the spokesman said.
