MINYA, Jan 17 (MENA) - Italy's Ambassador in Cairo Giampaolo Cantini has said that the long-standing and historic relations between Egypt and Italy are based on joint interests and fruitful cooperation in the fields of investment, culture and archeological missions.

Cantini made the remarks on Sunday during his visit to the Upper Egyptian governorate of Minya to discuss means of fostering bilateral partnership and experience exchange in various areas.

The Italian ambassador said he was pleased to be present in Minya, which enjoys mild weather and attractive archeological sites.

On his part, Minya Governor Osama el Qady lauded the strong relations binding Cairo and Rome.

The governor told the Italian diplomat that Minya has a distinguished geographical location and promising investment opportunities, noting that a number of development and service projects will be inaugurated in the Upper Egyptian governorate in 2021.

El Qady called on the Italian ambassador to visit a host of tourist places in the governorate, including the Monastery of Saint Mary in Samalut city.

The two sides also reviewed the EGP 52-million-project to upgrade Hafez al Sharqia canal in Abu Qurqas city, which is being implemented in cooperation with the EU.
