CAIRO – 2 January 2021: A Cairo criminal court renewed on Saturday the detention of three defendants in a notorious case of Fairmont Hotel gang rape dating back to 2014 for additional 30 days pending investigations.

The Egyptian Public Prosecution on August 26, 2020, revealed that the seven defendants left the country between July 27 and July 29. The victim reported the 2014 rape on Aug. 4 to the National Council for Women (NCW), which then filed the case to the prosecutor on behalf of the victim. Immediately, the prosecution put them on the travel ban list.

Few days later, the Egyptian authorities arrested several co-defendants, and two others were deported back to Egypt from Lebanon.

On November 21, 2020, a Cairo Criminal court also ordered to detain two defendants who were deported from Lebanon for 45 days pending investigations.
