CAIRO – 2 July 2017: Supreme body of Al-Wafd party rejected the resignation of General Secretary of the Party Bahaa Abu Shuqa during its general meeting on Saturday.

Abu Shuqa, who is also the head of the parliamentary Committee of Legislative and Constitutional Affairs, has submitted his resignation in mid-June, for being unsatisfied with some policies in the party.

Hamdy Saad, member in the parliamentary bloc of Al-Wafd party told Egypt Today, “He is a prominent figure in the party and it is not easy to waiver on him”.

“The party is trying to work with him to solve this issue”, he added.

The dispute between Abu Shuqa and the party members occurred following the parliamentary approval for the Egyptian-Saudi maritime demarcation agreement, as the party was against the approval and Abu Shuqa was the head of the committee that was assigned to discuss the agreement.

Also following the approval of the agreement, the only member who resigned from the parliament was Ahmed Fouad from Al-Wafd parliamentary bloc.

When asked if the disputes over the islands was beyond his resignation, Saad denied saying that disputes occurred because the parliamentary bloc of the party was not meeting on regular basis.

The member concluded that in case if their attempts with Abu Shuqa to stay failed, they will hold elections to select a new member for his seat.

Ahmed Al-Sageny, President of the Parliamentary Committee of the Wafd Party, previously said to Egypt Today that he contacted Abu Shuqa following his resignation, seeking clarification for it, explaining that the issue is related to differences of opinions.

Egypt Today attempted to contact Abu Shuqa for comment on his further stance following the party rejection for his resignation, but he was not reachable for comment.
