CAIRO – 21 December 2020: Egypt’s next parliament which is elected in 2020 to consider being the most representative of women, with total number of 148 female seats, unlike the 2015 parliament, in which the number of female representatives reached only 89 seats.

Egypt’s chairman for the National Council of Women, Maya Morsy described this to be ‘a great victory for Egyptian women’, and it contributes to ‘the rise of Egypt's indicators at the international level in the field of political empowerment of women’.

She added this this high number of female seats inside the parliament reflects the political leadership’s confidence in women's capabilities and potentials.

On December14, The Egyptian National Elections Authority (NEA) announced the final result of the House of Representatives runoff vote, declaring the names of winners of 100 seats for the run-off.

On December 7and 8, 2020, the runoff voting in the second phase of House of Representatives polls kicked off with 202 candidates vying to fill 101 seats at a total of 9,468 polling stations in 13 governorates. The second phase of the polls conducted in the governorates of Cairo, Qalyubiya, Daqahliya, Menufiya, Gharbiya, Kafr el Sheikh, Sharqiya, Damietta, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, North Sinai and South Sinai.

 The first phase of the election was held for Egyptian expats abroad from 21 to 23 October and locally from 24 to 25 October.  National Elections Authority held a press conference to announce the results of the first round of the first phase of voting in the 2020 House of Representatives Elections.

The NEA's Chairman Lashin Ibrahim stated that the turnout in the 14 governorates included in the first phase is 28.06 percent as almost nine million out of 31 million eligible citizens voted.

Regarding lists, the National List for Egypt won in the electoral districts of Upper Egypt (composed of 11 governorates) and Western Delta (composed of three governorates) securing 100 seats in the former and 42 in the latter. It was competing against Egypt's Call List.

Egypt’s 2020 parliament election were conducted on two phases since October until announcing the final results in December.

The total number of Egypt’s parliament is 568 members with up to 25 percent seats for women. 284 seats are determined according to the ‘individuals system’, and about 284 members elected under the ‘absolute closed lists system’.

Egypt’s president has the right to appoint up to 5 percent of the members.
