CAIRO – 20 December 2020: The Egyptian Dar Al Iftaa has warned against misuse of a new feature in the Russian-manufactured application Telegram application, saying that the new tool violates people’s privacy.

“We warn against misuse of the Nearby feature on the Telegram,” the house said in a statement on its social media platforms on Saturday, noting that violating privacy is religiously forbidden.

The location-based new feature allows users to find nearby people who uses Telegram even if the users have no their contact numbers.

This new feature reveals all nearby people, their profiles and accurately measures how far they locate away from the user who searches for more nearby people, in a way that violates people’s privacy.  Also, the feature also can find more groups operating nearby.

The statement said that many users became angry after receiving annoying messages and harassment from strangers via using this feature.
