Egypt’s National Council for Women offers psychological, legal support to Mit Ghamr harassment victim

Cairo – 18 December 2020: Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) said that they communicated with ‘Mit Ghamr victim of harassment' known as Basant; whom her story went viral on social media platforms during the few past days.

It was added that they provided her all psychological and legal support she might need and took immediate actions by contacting all concerned authorities to help her in her case against her aggressors.

One of the lawyers of the women's complaints office affiliated with NCW went with the victim to the Public Prosecution to file a report regarding the threats that the girl was receiving claimed to be from her aggressors’ relatives and family members.

The lawyer attended the prosecution investigations with the victim and provided the necessary legal advice according to NCW statement.

The Council, headed by Maya Morsy and all its members, expressed their ‘gratitude and appreciation’ to Counselor Hamada Al-Sawy, Egypt’s Public Prosecutor for his decision to detain seven suspects after accusing them of assaulting the girl.

Earlier, Egypt’s Public Prosecution ordered the detention of seven defendants for assaulting a girl in Mit Ghamr city.

Basant said that seven men followed her as she was walking on the streets and touched her body in an inappropriate way forcing her to ask for help from the people to be able to return to her home.

 In statements to ON TV privet Channel, Basant said that she is afraid for herself and her family due to receiving death threats from relatives of the defendants, to pressure her to drop the case against them.
