CAIRO - 18 November 2020: Nine Egyptians have been evacuated from the Ethiopian Tigray region in “full cooperation” on the Ethiopian authorities’ part, according to a Wednesday statement by the Egyptian embassy in Addis Ababa.
The embassy began its statement with sending its best regards to Ethiopia, where the embassy’s efforts over two weeks since the outbreak of clashes in Tigray to evacuate the Egyptian nationals, who worked at a cardboard and paper factory in Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, have finally been successful.
The Egyptian citizens have been evacuated in a group of 400 people of different nationalities with “full and highly appreciated” support of the United Nations and the International Red Cross, as well as full coordination with the relevant Ethiopian authorities.
Upon the arrival of Egyptian citizens, they were checked in at a hotel until the time of their flight.
The travel procedures for the nine Egyptians are being finalized in coordination with the quarantine authorities at Cairo International Airport.
The embassy called on Egyptians residing in Ethiopia to maintain contact with the embassy to perform the usual consular services and to check on their safety in light of the current developments in the country.
