National List for Egypt wins in 2 districts in 1st phase of voting in 2020 House of Representatives Elections

CAIRO – 1 November 2020: The National Elections Authority (NEA) held a press conference Sunday to announce the results of the first round of the first phase of voting in 2020 House of Representatives Elections.

 

The NEA's Chairman Lashin Ibrahim stated that the turnout in the 14 governorates included in the first phase is 28.06 percent as almost nine million out of 31 million eligible citizens voted.

 

Regarding lists, the National List for Egypt won in the electoral districts of Upper Egypt (composed of 11 governorates) and Western Delta (composed of three governorates) securing 100 seats in the former and 42 in the latter. It was competing against the Egypt's Call List.  

 

 

The governorates included in the Upper Egypt Electoral District are Giza (23 seats), Fayoum (9), Beni Suef (8), Menya (18), Asyut (11), New Valley (2), Sohag (13), Qena (9), Luxor (4), Aswan (4), and Red Sea (3).

 

The governorates included in the Western Delta Electoral District are Alexandria (18), Beheira (20), and Matrouh (4).

 

For individual candidates who compete over 142 seats in the first phase, Alexandria was divided into six districts with 16 seats; Beheira was divided into nine districts with 18 seats; and, Matrouh was divided into two districts with two seats.

 

Giza consists of 12 districts with 25 seats; Fayoum consists of four districts with 10 seats; Beni Suef consists of four districts with eight seats; Menya consists of six districts with 16 seats; Asyut consists of four districts with 12 seats; Sohag consists of eight districts with 14 seats; Qena consists of four districts with nine seats; Luxor consists of three districts with three seats; Aswan consists of four districts with five seats; New Valley consists of two districts with two seats; and Red Sea consists of three districts with three seats.

 

The first round of the first phase of voting – where a total of 1,879 individual candidates and two lists were running - took place on October 21-23 for expats, and October 24-25 for resident Egyptians. Some of the individual candidates are independent while the others are members of political parties.

 

The rerun of that phase over some individual seats will be held on November 21-23 for expats, and November 24-25 for resident citizens.

 

Justice Ibrahim stated that the Egyptian Armed Forces transported 1,200 judges and 70 tons of ballots as part of security measures it carried out in time of voting.

 

The first round of the second phase of voting will take place on November 4-6 for expats, and November 8-7 for resident citizens. The rerun of the second phase of voting will be held on December 5-7 for expats, and December 7-8 for resident citizens.

 

For individual candidates, 2,085 will run in 13 governorates, which are Cairo (19 districts with 31 seats); Qalyoubeya (six districts with 16 seats); Daqahleya (10 districts with 21 seats); Menoufeya (six districts with 11 seats); Sharqeya (eight districts with 21 seats); Gharbeya (seven districts with 14 seats); Kafr Al Sheikh (four districts with 10 seats); Ismailiyah (three districts with five seats); Suez (one district with two seats); Port Said; South Sinai; and, North Sinai. Each of the last three has two districts with two seats.

 

In the second phase, lists will be competing over 100 seats in Cairo, North and Middle Delta Electoral District, and 42 seats in Eastern Delta District.
