Five persons ordered detained over misusing social media in Egypt

CAIRO – 3 October 2020: The Public Prosecution ordered Saturday five defendants detained over publishing fake news on social media that would affect national security.

 

The detainees will remain in custody for 15 days pending investigations into these accusations of misusing social media.

 

The prosecution drawn a list of charges against the detainees, including: joining an outlawed group, aiming to disrupt the constitution, prevent the state institutions from carrying out their activities and spread false news about the political and economic affairs in the country, in a way that meeting the goals of the terrorist Brotherhood group.

 

The five are also accused of receiving funds for a terrorist purpose, participating in a criminal agreement intended to commit a terrorist crime, and using private accounts to commit crimes and disrupt public order.
