Egyptians abroad to register their data on NEA website, Sunday for House elections

CAIRO – 25 September 2020: Egypt’s National Elections Authority (NEA) announced, Friday that Egyptians abroad will be able to registering their data on the official website, starting, Sunday, September 27, until October 10, which would allow them to vote in the House of Representatives elections expected October 21, via mail.

NEA explained that according to the Authority’s decision No. 59 of 2020 regarding the regulation of procedures for Egyptian expats voting in the elections to the House of Representatives; All expats are obligated to register their data in order to vote.

Candidacy for Egypt’s House of Representatives elections were open since September 17 until September 23 as announced by NEA President Lasheen Ibrahim.

He said during press conference, September 10, announcing the elections timeline details that the elections’ first phase will be held for Egyptians abroad from 21 to 23 October and locally from 24 to 25 October, as its results will be announced, November 1.

The run-off elections will be held abroad from 21 to 23 November and locally on November 23 and 24, Ibrahim said.

For the second phase of elections, was set to be held abroad from 4 to 6 November and locally on 7 and 8 November and its results to be announced on November 15.

The run-off elections for the second phase will be conducted abroad on 5 to 7 December and locally on7 and 8 December. The final results of Egypt’s House elections to be formally announced by the National Elections Authority on December 14.

Ibrahim called all Eligible Egyptian voters to take part in the elections, confirming that all necessary and precautionary measures for COVID-19 will be taken during elections and inside the polling stations.

Egypt’s Senate elections was held in August and the results was announced August 19.

Ibrahim said that 8.959 million votes casted their ballots in the Senate elections.

During a press conference to announce the 2020 Senate Election results, Ibrahim noted that the participation rate in the election has reached 14.23 per cent.

The total number of valid votes reached nearly 7 million votes, with an attendance rate of 84 percent, while the number of invalid votes reached nearly one million votes, NEA head added.

He announced that the run-off voting round for Egyptian expats will be on September 6 and 7, while the voting process locally will be on September 8 and 9.

Egypt’s NEA head said that 74 individual seats of the 2020 Senate elections were settled; while 26 other seats will be in in the run-off round. The 2020 Senate elections list candidates won their seats after obtaining more than 5% of registered votes.

About 11 political parties included in the ‘National List for Egypt’, which settled its seats in the 2020 Senate elections. The parties included: “Nation's Future Party, Homeland Defenders Party, Conference Party, Egyptian Social Democratic Party, Al-Wafd, Republican People's Party, Egyptian Patriotic Movement, Modern Egypt Party, Reform and Development Party, National Progressive Unionist Party, Elhorya ElMasry party, Coordination of Parties Youth and Politicians along with other politicians”

The only electoral list included 35 main candidates and other 35 alternates.

The 2020 Senate elections were held abroad on 9 and 10 August, while locally it was held on 11 and 12 of the same months.

Citizens and officials, including the President, were seen while casting their ballots in the elections of the re-instated Egyptian Senate, amid calls for citizens to practice their constitutional right for the vital role the Senate is expected to play in the political scene.

A total of 63 million Egyptian registered voters were entitled to vote in the 2020 Senate elections, distributed among 14 thousand and 92 sub-committees, under full judicial supervision, with the participation of 18,000 judges and the assistance of 120,000 employees.
