CAIRO – 29 June 2017: Egypt was elected as a member in Group five on June 28, 2017, including Africa and Arab Peninsula in the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission ( IOP), which includes 148 UN member governments. This came after the sessions held from June 20 to June 29 at UNESCO headquarters, Paris.

The members of the Council Executive Committees of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission were elected in five groups to manage affairs of seas and oceans worldwide. Egypt was represented by professor Gad al Qady, President of the National Institute of Oceanography and Fishery (NIOF), and Muhammad Said, professor at the (NIOF), President of African Oceanography Commission and two other professors.

Egypt was elected as the head member of the African Oceanography Commission during the fourth session held in Alexandria in March 2017, which was hosted by the (NIOF), under the supervision of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Khalid Abdel Ghafar .
