CAIRO – 27 August 2020: A third batch of the new air-conditioned metro trains and tunnels are expected to arrive in September.

The new batch is part of a deal to manufacture and import 32 trains from the South Korean company Honda Rotem. The new trains will be installed on the third metro line. They will come from South Korea heading to Alexandria Port.

The new air-conditioned trains cost €317 million, in addition to L.E. 640 million from the state treasury (which is equal to L.E. 6.361 billion). While the foreign side is being funded through easy loans from the South Korean government with a grace period of 20 years, and a payment period of 33 years.

The new trains have distinctive features, including a high-capacity air-conditioning system, and a safe passageway that allows passengers to move between vehicles.

Above the side doors, there is a screen to inform passengers about the name of the final station, before they board the train.

There are also places designated for wheelchairs, and vehicles are provided with maps showing paths through illuminated lights to help people with hearing disabilities.
