CAIRO – 21 August 2020: The Gold’s Gym Egypt Nile ferry completely drowned on Thursday evening following a partial sinking that was caused by the heavy sporting equipment on board, no injuries or deaths were reported.

The partial sinking of the ferry docked at new Galaa Bridge in Giza dates back to around a year ago, but despite calls for renovation, the damage was enough to eventually cause the third floor to completely collapse due to the weak structure of the ferry.

An eyewitness has said that around 5:00 pm on Thursday the ferry partially sank, and many sporting equipment and machines on board were damaged.

He further confirmed that the ferry was completely empty of people and that no one was injured or reported dead.

Investigations revealed that the collapse of the third floor of the Nile cruise ship happened after some restorations by some workers who had already left the scene before the accident.

On June 7, 2019, the first floor of the ferry partially sank and the Emergency respondents in Giza were able to rescue those inside after the water leaked inside the first floor of the ship.

Egyptian MP Anissa Hassouna called on July 8, 2019 for an urgent investigation into the partial sinking of the ferry.

Hassouna had stressed that owners of the ferry and the included disco just blamed each other for the accident.

Hassouna also demanded taking the necessary measures that bind owners of ferries to maintaining periodical maintenance in order to ensure the safety of their employees and customers.
