Coronavirus death toll among doctors rises to 52

CAIRO – 8 June 2020: Five more doctors were announced dead of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on June 8, raising the total number of deaths among doctors to 52.

The Egyptian Medical Syndicate mourned the doctors affirming that they are doing their best to provide all needed medical equipment and requirements and to provide them with a good level of security and protection.

On June 4, the Medical Syndicate mourned the death of a teacher at the Faculty of Medicine, Al-Azhar University in Damietta, who died of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

"The total confirmed coronavirus cases among doctors reached 372 cases, of which 160 doctors are still receiving treatment, and about 80 doctors recovered completely," Karim Mesbah, member of the Medical Syndicate told Youm 7 newspaper on June 4.

He added that the number of deaths reached 38, and the number of infections among doctors is expected to increase strongly during the coming days. Nearly 14 doctors died between June 4 and 8, according to the statements.

Egypt recorded 1467 new coronavirus cases, Sunday, raising the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak in Egypt to 34079.

Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said in the daily briefing that 39 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 1187.

"As many as 423 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving the necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 8961 so far," the spokesman said.

"The number of coronavirus patients who had now been retested for the virus and received negative results has reached 10131," he added.
