CAIRO - 4 June 2020: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry conducted on June 3, 2020 a telephone call with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov, during which they discussed means to promote relations of cooperation between Egypt and Russia in various fields, and a number of issues of concern to both countries.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Counselor Ahmed Hafez, stated that the two ministers expressed their aspiration to continue working towards enhancing bilateral cooperation at all fronts, thereby reflecting the deep-rooted strategic ties between Egypt and Russia. In this context, the two ministers stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum witnessed in the bilateral relations during the last period, and the need to intensify political consultation between Cairo and Moscow.

Hafez added that the two ministers discussed the regional situation, especially the developments in Libya, whereby Minister Shoukry asserted the need to support the UN efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive political solution in order to restore security and eliminate all manifestations of terrorism. Moreover, they consulted on developments of the Palestinian cause, affirming the importance of preserving the chances of reaching a comprehensive and just political settlement for the question in the framework of the two-state solution, while warning against the perils of any Israeli unilateral measures to annex parts of the occupied Palestinian territories as this would only complicate the situation and affect regional stability and security.

Minister Shoukry also briefed his Russian counterpart on the latest developments pertaining to the Renaissance Dam file, while outlining the course of negotiations and the Egyptian side’s acceptance to resume the negotiation track which should indispensably culminate in reaching an agreement at the earliest opportunity, and emphasizing refusal of Ethiopia’s taking of any unilateral action without reaching an agreement.
