CAIRO – 1 June 2020: The Egyptian Health Ministry will distribute a million drug doses of Vitamin D to quarantine hospitals, as an important element to support the immune cells of the doctors treating coronavirus (COVID-19) patients.

This will help doctors as they stay for long time inside hospitals without being subjected to sunlight, the Health Ministry said.

The Egyptian Medical Syndicate has earlier mourned the death of a consultant doctor who had contracted the novel coronavirus and died with it, the 26th reported case among doctors.

As many as 350 coronavirus cases among doctors have been reported, while the Egyptian Medical Syndicate has called on the government to meet some of the demands related to safety and health of the medical teams inside hospitals.

The death of the consultant internist, Gamal Abo al-Ela, comes dew days after a meeting between Head of the Medical Syndicate Hassan Khairy and Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli, shortly after a young doctor died from coronavirus in Cairo, due to alleged administrative failure.

Minister of Health Hala Zayed ordered an investigation into the death of doctor Walid Yahia Abdel-Halim, who served in al-Munira hospital downtown Cairo. The initial investigation results regarding the death of the young physician shows some administrative deficiencies in dealing with the situation inside the hospital.

According to sources, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is following up on the investigation.



Egypt reported 1536 new coronavirus, COVID-19 cases, Sunday, raising the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak in Egypt to 24985.

Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said in the daily briefing that 46 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 959.

As many as 344 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 6810 so far, the spokesman said.

The number of coronavirus patients who had now been retested for the virus and received negative results has reached 6037, he added.
