CAIRO- 17 April 2020: Egypt's Secretary-General of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) Azza El-Ashmawy passed away on Thursday.

Ashmawy passed away after a long battle with cancer. The NCCM mourned her death.



Health Minister Hala Zayed and the Chairwoman of the National Council for Women (NCW) Maya Morsi offered their condolences for Ashmawy's death. Meanwhile, the European Union mission in Cairo expressed sincere condolences to her family, members of the National Council for Childhood, her colleagues, and friends.



In June 2018, Ashmawy was re-elected as a representative of Egypt at the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) for a second term respectively.

Ashmawy has taken part in several activities in Africa as a ACERWC member, such as preparing the African childhood initiative 2040, as well as preparing studies about children’s conditions.

She also organized the celebrations of African Child Day under the title “We will not leave a child alone for Africa’s development, where several international and regional organizations participated, like Plan International, UNICEF, International Organization For Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
