Education Min. confirms continuance of academic year amid fears of coronavirus

CAIRO - 10 March 2020: Official sources at the Ministry of Education said that school students' attendance rates are above average, despite the parents’calls to stop the academic year in fear of the spread of the coronavirus.

"The ministry is monitoring the attendance rates with directorates and educational departments through operating rooms that prepare daily reports and submit them to the ministry," the source stated.

Minister of Education Tarek Shakwy confirmed that the ministry has a crisis room to monitor the situation, noting that rumors of suspending the academic year for basic education stage are not true.

Shawky continued, "In case the academic year is suspended for a certain period of time for objective reasons decided by the state through the Ministry of Health as well as basic education, technical and sovereign devices, a student will not to be promoted to a new educational stage unless they complete their studies at their current stage. Also,scores will not be deducted or addeddue to the circumstance."
