CAIRO – 13 January 2020: Arabiya.net reported Monday that a Qatari civil aircraft miraculously survived an Iranian missile mistakenly launched on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

The Saudi website of Al-Arabiya TV channel explained that a missile near Tehran’s Khomeini Airport could have mistakenly hit a Qatari passenger jet.

Last week, Iran has admitted "unintentionally" shooting down a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing all 176 people on board, most of whom were Iranians.

The Qatar Airways plane flew on the same route of the Ukrainian flight, according to its flight map, which is available online.

Flight number QR491 was aboard a Boeing jet that took off at 4:45 a.m. on Wednesday from Ayatollah Khomeini Airport, and arrived at 6:25 a.m. at Doha Airport, 13 minutes before the Ukrainian plane took off from the same Iranian Airport to the capital Kiev.

Al-Arabiya said that many airlines suspended flights to Tehran, fearing the same fatal mistake that killed all passengers aboard the Ukrainian jet.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency recommended airlines to avoid the Iranian airspace until further notice, according to Reuters.
