CAIRO – 17 June 2017: Ministry of Transportation spokesman Mohamed Ezz announced on Friday that the ministry had renovated 178,584 km of railroads during fiscal year 2016-2017. Of those, 70 km were renovated between January and June 15, 2017.

The ministry implemented a project to strengthen the railway network’s share in cargo transport to alleviate loads on road networks.

As El Masry El Youm reported, the ministry aims to transport 25 million tons annually through railroads by 2022.

The renovated railroad lines comprised several railway routes. The most important of which are Cairo-Aswan, El Qabary-Matrouh, Tanta-Zagazig, Heliopolis-Suez and Nefisha-Suez.

Railroad renovation rates jumped from 5.4 km monthly to 14 km monthly through both restored and new equipment and machines brought before 2015, according to El Masry El Youm.

Ezz stated that the ministry will renovate 168 km of railroads in the fiscal year 2017-2018, and will start the renovation of 1,200 km railroads in the fiscal year 2018-2019. The renovation will take two years to complete.
