CAIRO – 27 December 2019: Egypt condemns the terrorist attacks that targeted civilians and military personnel in northern Burkina Faso over the past days, causing the death of many citizens mostly women, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The ministry described the incident as one of the bloodiest attacks the African country has suffered.

The statement expressed Egypt's sincere condolences to the government and people of Burkina Faso and the families of the victims. It also wished speedy recovery for the injured citizens.

The ministry affirmed Egypt's support for Burkina Faso in its national efforts to eliminate terrorism and recover from this tragic incident.

It also stressed the importance of concerted regional and international efforts to support national efforts in the African Sahel countries to confront terrorism and stop its financing sources.

Christmas celebrations in the country were cancelled as on Christmas eve, 35 civilians as well as 80 soldiers were killed, according to Burkina authorities. The incident was described by the Financial Times as Burkina’s bloodiest incident in five years.
