Calls for enhancing cooperation between Egypt, UN regarding women’s rights

CAIRO – 12 November 2019: The Egyptian Center for Women's Rights has called for improving women’s conditions through developing relations and cooperation between the Egyptian government and the United Nations.

During a conference organized on the sidelines of the periodic review of the Egyptian human rights file in Geneva, it was noted that the religious trend played an opposing role regarding women's rights in Egypt, and that the extremist thoughts should be confronted and controlled.




The conference which was held in the headquarter of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), was attended by head of the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights Nehad Abul Komsan, head of Association For The Development & Enhancement Of Women, Iman Bibars and head of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights Hafez Abu Saeda.

Abul Komsan confirmed that Women’s rights witnessed huge development after the government acceptance for nearly 75 recommendations, in terms of legislation and strategies to protect women from violence.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as well was criminalized and prohibited in public hospitals; Abul Komsan added.





She called for the need to amend the law to be fair, balanced and responsive to the needs of Egyptians.

Iman Bibars, for her part, said that there has been significant progress over the past five years on the status of women at the legislative and policy levels.

She noted the importance of the National Strategy for Women 2030 which focuses on increasing women's employment opportunities and participation in entrepreneurship, increasing women's economic opportunities and increasing training opportunities.

Abu Saeda spoke about the fact that women's participation in political life was one of main demands of the feminist movement in Egypt.

In 1956, the rights of political practice were granted to women according to Seda. He pointed out that there are currently 90 women members in the House of Representatives.
