Egypt jumps 89 ranks in road quality in 5 years

CAIRO - 4 November 2019: The Cabinet’s Information Center announced that Egypt jumped 89 places in roads quality rankings by The Global Economy from the 118th in 2014 to the 29th in 2019.

In the years 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, the ranks were 110th, 108th, 76th and 43rd, respectively. As for the rating of the quality of roads, it is as follows with 1 point being the worst and 7 points being the best: 3.3 in 2007, 3.4 in 2008, 3.5 in 2009, 3.7 in 2010, 3.4 in 2011, 2.9 in 2012, 2.7 in 2013, 2.9 in 2014, 3 in both 2015 and 2016, 3.9 in 2017, 4.5 in 2018, and 5.1 in 2019.

The Cabinet clarified that the national project for roads targets to execute 7,000 kilometers of roads. Topresent, 5,000 kilometers have been completedand the rest is under construction. In parallel, innovation works in 5,000 kilometers of existing roads havebeen taking place.

The number of traffic crashes declined by 41.1 percent between 2014 and 2018. The figures for each year are: 14,403 in 2014, 14,548 in 2015, 14,710 in 2016, 11,098 in 2017, and 8,480 in 2018.

Deaths and injuries caused by such crashes also dropped by 50.5 percent and 51.1 percent, respectively, during the same period. The figures for deaths are: 6,236 in 2014, 6,203 in 2015, 5,343 in 2016, 3,747 in 2017, and 3,087 in 2018. The figures for injuries are: 24,154 in 2014, 19,325 in 2015, 18,646 in 2016, 13,998 in 2017, and 11,803 in 2018.
