CAIRO - 30 October 2019: The Ministry of Social Solidarity announced Wednesday dispensing a death grant of LE20,000 to the family of a young man who was killed jumping off a train.

The victim’s companion, another young man, also jumped off the train and had his leg amputated as a result. The ministry said it will study his case to decide on another grant for him.

The Railway Authority has already stated it would pay the deceased’s family LE100,000, and LE20,000 for the injured.

The incident took place Monday, but the details are contested. Reportedly, the two men had neither tickets nor their value. A train conductor allegedly opened a door in the train and ordered them to jump. The conductor, Magdy Hammam, says they jumped on their own will to avoid arrest at the next station in the Delta’s Tanta, Gharbia governorate.

Hammam, however, has been detained pending investigations.
