Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed announced 2019 Nobel Peace Laureate

CAIRO - 11 October 2019: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was announced 2019 Nobel Peace laureate for achieving peace and solving the problem of Ethiopian-Eritrean border, which had been closed for 20 years, stated the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday.


“The prize is also meant to recognise all the stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions,” the committee

said

.




In July 2018, Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki signed a peace agreement to end a border conflict remained a continuation of the Eritrean–Ethiopian War [1998–2000]. On September 11, 2018, the border reopened and the Prime Minister ordered Ethiopian troops to withdraw from the border.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Office issued a statement to express pride of Mr. Abiy Ahmed, saying he achieved tremendous peaceful actions on the national and regional levels.



Besides political peaceful efforts, The 43-year-old Prime Minister, who assumed office in April 2018, has launched Initiative “Green Legacy”, which resulted in cultivating more than 350 million trees in only 12 hours in August 2019 to to combat climate change and its impact, and deforestation.
