EAEA targets expansion in gamma irradiation sterilization technology

CAIRO - 11 September 2019: Chairman of the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) Atef Abdel Hamid told to Egypt Today that the institution works on expanding in the gamma irradiation sterilization technology to boost exports.

The official explained that food irradiation has become an indispensable technique that can improve the value of Egyptian and Arab goods. He added that the authority possesses radiotherapy and radiosterilization units and that it regularly organizes workshops to exchange updates in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy.

On Tuesday, a workshop on ionizing radiation gamma held by the institution in collaboration with the Arab Atomic Energy Authority (AAEA) concluded. The event that took place on August 31 - September 5 examined food irradiation techniques.

Chairwoman of the National Center for Radiation Research and Technology Sahar Ismail said that scientists in the workshop discussed using radiation in environment preservation and water treatment.

The official clarified that ionizing radiation can be used to disinfect sewage water and agricultural wastewater as well as solid waste so they can be recycled and used in agriculture and fertilization. The recommendations also included promoting acceptance of products treated by radiation among consumers.
