CAIRO – 24 June 2019: The number of metro journeys in the third line will be increased on Wednesday, coinciding with the football game between Egypt and DR Congo in Cairo in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Spokesperson of the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation Ahmed Abdel-Hadi told al-Watan newspaper.

The employees of the three lines of the metro are on alert to face any possible emergency malfunctions, he added, saying “90 teams for emergency and maintenance are being deployed daily.”

On June 15, 2019, Egypt inaugurated three new stations at the third line to serve the commuters during the African Cup of Nations Championship.

Around 3.5 million Cairenes use the metro every day, switching between stations to reach their destinations while paying an affordable ticket.

Launched in 1987, the metro has since become the most important means of transportation, helping passengers to avoid getting stuck in Cairo traffic or having to negotiate fares with unmetered taxis. Female commuters can choose to take the non-segregated cars or use the women-only carriages.
