Shoukry stresses Egypt's keenness to promote joint African action

CAIRO - 28 May 2019: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed during the Iftar gathering of African ambassadors in Cairo Egypt's keenness to promote joint African action and to improve its mechanisms to meet political, economic and security challenges facing the continent.

The minister added that Egypt believes in the African countries' ability to work together to overcome those challenges and to achieve peace and prosperity for all peoples of the continent.

According to a statement issued by spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez, Shoukry reviewed the most important issues that top the agenda of Egypt's chairmanship of the AU. Those aim at achieving sustainable development through economic and regional integration, the activation of the continental free trade agreement, and the promotion of African mechanisms for post-conflict reconstruction and development.

The foreign minister pointed out that the collective responsibility of African countries requires achieving a better future for the peoples of the continent, as well as empowering women and young people.

For his side, Cameroon's ambassador to Morocco, Mohamedou Labring, noted the keenness of the African ambassadors in Cairo to play an active role and contribute to everything that boosts the activities of the African Union.

He referred to the efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Egyptian institutions to help and facilitate the work of the African embassies in Cairo.
