CAIRO – 20 May 2019: Canadian Senate Speaker George Furey praised the Egyptian president's counter-terrorism efforts and adoption of a reformist approach in Egypt on the economic and social levels, presidential spokesman Bassam Radi said.

During his visit to Egypt on Sunday and his meeting with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Furey also lauded the president's role in achieving security and stability, which strengthened Egypt's active role in promoting stability and security in the region and Africa, Radi said.

Furthermore, Furey highlighted Egypt's central role in the Middle East.

The meeting reviewed Egypt's efforts to combat terrorism and extremism and reform religious discourse.

President Sisi stressed Egypt's keenness to consolidate the culture of pluralism and acceptance of others. He pointed out that Egypt is a role model for peaceful coexistence in the region, which contributes to the efforts of bringing together different peoples and cultures.

During his visit to Cairo, Furey met with Egypt's Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal, who praised the level of cooperation between the two countries. Abdel Aal also announced establishing an Egyptian-Canadian parliamentary friendship association to promote bilateral relations between the two countries.

Furey's visit comes after a long period of preparation between Egyptian Ambassador to Canada Ahmed Abu Zeid and some officials from Egypt and Canada, the Egyptian Parliament said in a statement.
