CAIRO – 9 June 2017: Prime Minister Sherif Ismail assigned the Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali as the head of the committee responsible for the Egyptian Community in Qatar. Wali is also responsible for following up with returning nationals over the next few days.

The committee includes the Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs, Nabila Makram Wassef and representatives of relevant bodies.

Efforts are being exerted to communicate with the Egyptian community in Qatar after Egypt and a number of Gulf states severed diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday, over allegations the state funds and harbors terrorists.

“Egypt’s government is following up the consequences of severing diplomatic relations with Qatar, and we formed an emergency committee to assist Egyptians in Qatar,” Said Sherif Ismail following a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Egypt also declared on Monday that the Greek Embassy in Qatar would act on Egypt’s behalf to follow up on the interests of Egyptian citizens currently based in Qatar.

Mohamed al-Iraqi, head of the Egyptian community in Qatar, said previously that there are 300,000 Egyptians living in Qatar and working in different fields, Reuters reported Monday.

The government confirmed that recent developments in Qatari-Egyptian relations “have no effect” on Egyptian laborers in Qatar, Ismail said.
