CAIRO – 5 April 2019: Algeria’s Ennahar satellite channel announced Friday the sacking of Athmane Tartag, Algeria's intelligence chief.

Tartag, a retired army general, was an ally of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned on Tuesday in the face of mass protests.

On April 3, Bouteflika resigned after weeks of massive street protests, dropping ropped plans to seek a fifth term as opposition to his rule grew.

The powerful Algerian army had called for the 82-year-old to be declared incapable of carrying out his duties.

Protesters have vowed to continue piling on pressure until the entire government is ousted.
