30,000 housing units to be built on reclaimed land

CAIRO – 5 June 2017: The New Cairo City Development Authority has recovered 2,000 feddans (1 feddan is equal to 1.038 acres) of residential and industrial lands that were encroached upon since 2012, Akhbar El Youm reported Saturday.

An official source from the Housing Ministry said 30,000 social housing units will be built on a portion of the reclaimed land upon the orders of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.

Earlier in May, Sisi ordered the army and police to investigate land encroachments and reclaim illegally acquired state lands.

Some governorates have been declared squatter-free, including Cairo, Sharqia, New Valley, Gharbia, the Red Sea and Ismailia, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Local Development last week.
