CAIRO – 23 February 2019: Cairo Criminal Court sentenced to life 10 defendants on Sunday over charges linked to 2011 riots known in the media as “Cabinet Incidents” and “Egyptian Scientific Institute Burning” cases.

Around 32 defendants in the cases are sentenced to life in absentia, including Actor Tareq el-Nahry, who are charged with involvement in burning the Egyptian Scientific Institute (Institut d’Egypte).

Among the defendants is the, who is facing charges of involvement in setting fire in public facilities, gathering, protests and possession of weapons.

In December 2011, security forces dispersed a three-week sit-in at the Cabinet building, which caused clashes in the area surrounding the Cabinet and Shura Council and led to the burning of the Scientific Institute.

Tareq el-Nahry was arrested in April 2012 in the case, and was later released. He was then sentenced in absentia among others in the same case.
