CAIRO - 4 February 2019: Alexandria started the pilot operation of the first electric bus, while the first air-conditioned tram was shipped from Ukraine to the port of the Mediterranean city two days ago, said Head of Alexandria's General Authority of Passengers Transport Khaled Elewa.

The governorate started implementing its transportation development plan in 2015 after being inefficient for more than 60 years, he added in an interview with Egypt today.

Elewa referred that the government launched an international tender in 2015 to import 15 air-conditioned trams. After winning the tender, Ukraine sent the first advanced tram and it is expected to deliver the rest over 2019, he continued.

Alexandria has a 28-kilometer line for tram system covering the whole city and serving more than 5 million people, Elewa said.

As for the E-ticketing service, Elewa said that the authority is set to apply this unified ticketing service for all means of transportation in 2019.
