UN envoy for Syria starts mission

DAMASCUS, 7 Jan 2019: United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen assumed his post on Monday.

The veteran Norwegian diplomat has succeeded Staffan de Mistura whose four-year tour of duty ended without reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

Pedersen was Norway’s representative to the Palestinian Authority in the late 1990s.
