CAIRO – 6 January 2019: Egypt's Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfik has followed up on preparations of the security departments for securing citizens during the Christmas celebrations, accompanied with security leaders.

The minister also checked deployment plans of the security forces in many sensitive places including churches and tourist destinations nationwide. He urged doubling efforts exerted to secure these places and the roads leading to them.

Late in December, the Interior Ministry issued a security alert across Egypt's governorates for New Year's celebrations.

On Saturday, an Egyptian police officer was killed while attempting to defuse an explosive device found at a church in an eastern Cairo suburb, state television reported, less than two days prior to Coptic Christmas celebrated by Egypt's Christians.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the incident and no official confirmation from the government.
