CAIRO – 1 June 2017: A 12-story building in Al-Azarita, an Alexandrian neighborhood, leaned Thursday over another building due to structural damage. In all 19 families were evacuated from both buildings. No injuries or deaths have been reported.

The evacuated families have been relocated to the Toson neighborhood following a decision made by the governor of Alexandria Mohamed Soltan.

The residents of surrounding buildings have been temporarily evacuated as well after cutting electricity, gas, and water for safety reasons.

A municipal decision in 2004 had ordered the building be demolished after it was found to have a slight lean caused in part by the unlawful construction of extra floors.

The decision was not executed because residents refused to evacuate the building.
