CAIRO – 23 December 2018: The 1883 Krakatau deadly eruption reoccurred as over 220 people were reported killed and hundreds others were injured after a tsunami stroke Indonesian Sunda Strait.

1883 eruption

The largest eruption of the Krakatau volcano was in 1883; more than 36,000 people died due to the eruption and the tsunamis it triggered. Over two-thirds of the country was also destroyed.

The eruption of the Krakatau volcano in 1883 led to a bombing that was considered the highest voice ever heard in modern history. Reports show that the sound of the volcano eruption was heard 3000 miles away of its origin.

On Dec. 22, at least 220 people were killed and 843 others were injured on the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra after Anak Krakatau volcano caused a tsunami, government officials said.

According to Reuters, hundreds of homes and other buildings were “heavily damaged” when the tsunami struck along the rim of the Sunda Strait late on Saturday, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the disaster mitigation agency, said.

Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate to higher ground. There was no estimate on the number of missing, Reuters reported.
