CAIRO - 30 September 2018: Political activist and member of outlawed April 6 Youth Movement, Amal Fathy, was sentenced to two years in prison, bailed LE 20,000 ($1,122) and fined LE 10,000 over charges of publishing false news and insulting the state, lawyer Ramadan Mohamed Hassan told Egyptian media outlets on Saturday.

Over the first charge, Maadi Court of Misdemeanors handed Fathy a year in jail and a fine of LE 10,000 after she “insulted” an employee at Banque Misr. As for the charge of posting false news, she was sentenced to one year, with the suspension of the ruling execution. She was also fined LE 20,000 over charges of “insulting the state” in a video posted on her Facebook account.

Despite paying the bail, Fathy will be kept in custody over the charge of belonging to an outlawed group. In 2014, the Egyptian government designated anti-Mubarak April 6 Movement.
