CAIRO - 27 September 2018: The UNICEF lauded on Thursday efforts exerted by Egypt to back child protection programs, especially those fighting female genital mutilation.

In statements after a meeting with Assiut Governor Gamal Nour el Din, the director of UNICEF evaluation office said the UNICEF programs, especially as regards fighting female genital mutilation, are carried out in 17 countries, including Egypt.

These programs are highly appreciated by the Egyptian government and civil society organizations, he added.

The governor reviewed efforts by the governorate in the child protection domain, saying the governorate formed the general committee for child protection and set up a child protection unit at the City Hall.

Also programs aiming at promoting public awareness of the seriousness of female genital mutilation were carried out in cooperation with men of religion, the education ministry and palaces of culture.
