Egyptian receives €97,000 compensation from Greece

CAIRO – 23 August 2018: Egypt's Labor Representation Bureau in Athens succeeded in acquiring and delivering a compensation of €97,000 for a citizen who was injured while working in the country, Minister of Labor Mohamed Saafan announced Wednesday.

The worker fell off a building in the Greek capital and broke both his legs which caused him a permanent disability.

The bureau supported the citizen in the lawsuit he filed until he received the sum upheld by the Supreme Civil and Criminal Court in Greece.

In March, Minister of Solidarity Ghada Wali declared that the payouts of 182 Egyptians who had worked in Greece were transferred in collaboration with the Greek Department of Private Insurance Supervisions.

The total sum is in the value of €2 million (LE45 million). The payouts were pensions, and compensations for injuries and deaths.

Greece is expected to transfer the payouts of 110 Egyptians who returned to Egypt. Both countries have been collaborating to inhibit dual insurance and transferring payouts once the citizen of either countries returns to the homeland facilitating pensions delivery.

The total number of Egyptians covered by social insurance in Greece is 134,183. The breakdown is 24,511 fishermen, 106,979 farmers and 2,693 independent workers, according to the Ministry of Labor.
