Cairo - 23 May 2017: A huge number of cars have been added to Egypt’s streets since Uber and Careem transportation networks began operating in Egypt, causing major traffic congestion, parliamentarian Saeed Taima, Chairman of the Transportation and Communications Committee, said Monday.

At least 110 thousand cars operate in Cairo and Giza as part of Uber and Careem, besides 80 thousand cabs, according to Taima, who claimed the companies “will destroy the country.”

He criticized the Urban Transport Authority (UTA) over the ongoing overcrowding, accusing it of playing no role in resolving traffic congestion, Taima said during a House of Representatives meeting.

Many Egyptians have been reporting their preference to use Uber and Careem over taxis because of the frequent disputes with taxi drivers over the fare and harassment, among other reasons.

Taima requested work plan from the UTA during the upcoming fiscal year.
