CAIRO – 4 July 2018: Eretria is keen to join dots with Ethiopia for the benefit of the two peoples, Eritrean Ambassador to Cairo, Fasil Gebreselasie Takla, said on Tuesday.

The ambassador’s remarks came during his meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister for African Affairs, Hamdi Loza. The meeting was hosted by the Parliamentary Committee of the African Affairs.

Takla stressed that Ethiopia’s newly-appointed prime minister brought about new changes to the longest-running conflict in the African continent; the prime minister unconditionally accepted the Algiers agreement 2000, and the border demarcation agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, confirming that Eretria awaits the implementation of the agreement.

“Eritrea wants to open a new chapter in the relations between the two countries in order to achieve regional peace and stability,” he added.

During the meeting, the ambassador described the Egyptian-Eritrean relations as "strategic" and of a great deal of importance for the coalition of the Horn of Africa, the geopolitical area of the Nile Basin and the Red Sea, pointing out that the assassination attempt on former President Hosni Mubarak made Africa pay dearly for the withdrawal of Egypt in favor of others.

The ambassador reiterated that under the current leadership, Egypt has returned to play its role as an essential pillar of the economic integration between the African countries. “There is a strong political keenness to strengthen bilateral relations by establishing joint agricultural and health projects, and to expand cooperation on fish welfare, electricity and education.”

The Eritrean ambassador noted that his mother is an Egyptian national, adding that he was also born in Egypt and studied in the Faculty of Economics and Political science, Cairo University, pointing out that the Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki visited Egypt 24 times in 27 years.

Eritrea's top diplomat in Ethiopia for historic talks

27 June 2018: Ethiopia rolled out the red carpet for Eritrea's top diplomat on Tuesday as the two nations took the next step in a historic initiative aimed at ending decades of conflict and hostility. The thaw between the foes who fought a bitter border war 20 years ago comes after an olive branch was dramatically offered by new Ethiopian prime minister, Abiy Ahmed.
