CAIRO – 14 May 2017: Al-Azhar institute seeks to draft a law to counter terrorism and violence committed in the name of religion, according to the religious body’s official website.

The institute will form a committee headed by Al-Azhar’s legal and legislative advisor, Mohamed Abdel Salam, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayyeb decided Sunday.

Several meetings are being held with experts to present preliminary ideas to the Grand Imam, Abdel Salam stated. Tayyeb has issued his directions to work intensively on the draft law, to be presented to Al-Azhar's Council of Senior Scholars and then the parliament, he added.

The decision comes in light of the religious body’s efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, and spread a culture of brotherhood and compassion, the statement read.
