CAIRO – 3 April 2018: The Ministry of Interior flagged up to four terrorist-moderated Facebook accounts believed to disseminate and regularly post content encouraging violence.

The security services have also held 33 people accused of being involved in online abuse, including physical extortion and luring, according to a statement from the ministry.

This came within the framework of the efforts exerted by security agencies to fight all kinds of crimes, especially those committed through technology and social networking sites.

In press remarks in early March, Minister of Communication and Information Technology Yasser Al-Qadi stated that the government is currently working on implementing the “Egyptian Facebook”, adding no further details about the project.

Egypt has the largest number of Facebook users in the Arab world, with approximately 34.5 million reported users of the social network.

In 2016, the Ministry of Interior suspended 154 terrorism-linked Facebook pages.
