CAIRO – 30 March 2018: The current leader of the Wafd Party, El-Sayed el-Badawi, participated in the election of Wafd’s new chairperson, which took place on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Four candidates are running for the party’s chairmanship, after eight years under the leadership of Badawi, who held the position from 2010 for two four-year terms.

According to Wafd’s new regulations, he cannot run for this position for a third term.

Badawi said that he does not support a specific candidate, while he maintains the same distance in dealing with all the candidates.

Wafd Party members choose their new leader on Friday

CAIRO - 30 March 2018: The Wafd Party chairmanship election kicks off on Friday. The candidates include Wafd Party Secretary-General Bahaaeddin Abu Shoka; Hossam Al-Kholi, deputy chairman of the party; Yasser Hassan, head of the party's media committee; and Alaa Shawally, grandson of Saad Zaghloul, the late founder of the party.

Early in the morning, Abu Shoka and Hossam Al-Kholi casted their votes in the election, while their supporters gathered outside the polling station holding banners with the candidates’ names.

Former Secretary-General of the Wafd Party and former Minister of Trade Monir Fakhry Abdelour also casted his vote, along with the chairman of Parliament's local government committee, Ahmed el-Segani, and Hany Sary el-Din, member of the supreme committee of the Wafd Party, as well as MP Talaat el-Swedi.

Abdelour showed his support for Abu Shoka, saying that he will be a president for all Wafd members who can bring them back to be one hand. Meanwhile, Sary el-Din voted for Kholi, saying that his electoral program is ambitious and that he is the best to lead the party in the next period.
