9 sentenced to life over Brotherhood's 'qualitative committees'

CAIRO – 21 March 2018: Cairo Criminal Court, headed by Chancellor Shaaban al-Shamy, sentenced 13 suspects to serve a 10 year sentence, three years for minors, while nine suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday, in the case known as “Advanced Quality Committees”.

The list of those convicted for life imprisonment in absentia include: Mahmoud Mohamed Fathy, Usama Ibrahim Ali, Hisham Tamer Abdel Hakim, Maysa el Sayed, Hajar Essam el Din Ali, Abeer Mokhtar el Saadi, Samy Mohamed Abdou, Khaled Hassan Abdel Hamid, Samah Saad Ahmed

Public prosecutions accused the defendants of a number of charges, including that three of the defendants allegedly assumed leadership of a group, established contrary to the provisions of law, to prevent state institutions and public authorities from carrying out their duties, and to violate the personal freedoms of citizens; this incident took place from the beginning of 2014 to March 28, 2016.

The defendants sentenced to ten years in prison are: Mahmoud Talaat, Islam Jamal, Wael Mohammed, Ahmed Mohamed, Omar Hassan Abdel Hamid, Ahmed Mohamed Haitham, Mustapha Mohamed Mostafa, Nabil Azmy Mahmoud, Islam Mohamed, Mahmoud Taha Abdullah, Ahmed Ali Khalil, Abdul Aziz Shaaban and Mahmoud Al Sayyid Amin.
