CAIRO – 2 May 2017: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi delivered an impassioned verbal tribute to Egyptian women, proclaiming them "great national heroines." Early this year, Sisi declared 2017 as the Year of Egyptian Women.

President Sisi’s homage was recorded by the National Council for Women (NCW) on its official Facebook page. The NCW acknowledged the female empowerment aspects of his announcement.

According to the NCW, Sisi emphasized that what women have been offered up to now is little compared to what women deserve for their selflessness and efforts, adding that women make sacrifices for Egypt’s sake.

The report transcribes key remarks by the president stressing the vital roles played by Egyptian women in the countryside and towns that help to push the country forward toward development and progress.

In his declaration of 2017 as the Year of Egyptian Women, Sisi stressed women’s central role for the future of Egypt, the need to safeguard their constitutional rights, having them at the forefront of active citizenship, and the steps needed to expedite their empowerment.

In March, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) celebrated with Egypt what they considered to be the ingenuity, courage, and determination of Egyptian women and the extraordinary roles they perform in their families and communities across Egypt.
