CAIRO – 14 March 2018: Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb embarked on a tour on Wednesday to visit Portugal and attend the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Islamic Society in Portugal.

It is worth mentioning that the Catholic university (the largest university in Portugal) will celebrate the Grand Imam’s visit.

After his visit to Portugal, the Grand Imam will head to Mauritania to participate in an open discussion with several senior religious scholars on combating violence and extremism.

He will also meet with several officials including the Mauritanian president, speaker of parliament, prime minister and minister of foreign affairs to sign a MoU between Al-Azhar University and a number of scientific institutions in Mauritania.

In the beginning of 2018, Al-Azhar Grand Imam wished a peaceful year to the entire world, calling for the necessity of enhancing the values of tolerance and coexistence and renouncing all aspects of violence, racism, and extremism.

In a statement on New Year's Eve, Tayeb said that all people should work together to campaign for justice and equality and to help the vulnerable, disadvantaged and oppressed people.

The Grand Imam also called for fighting poverty, hunger, marginalization and oppression in the globe, especially in Africa, Palestine, and Burma.
